What is Success!

The end to a long busy and frustrating week has come. It was filled with parents trying to do right by their children but in the end not holding them accountable for their actions. Then there were meetings on why students did not do well on their 9 week assessments. Never mind that they were exceptional education students.
Since when does success mean you must get 100's, what happenned to the idea that the students showed growth. We need to celebrate their continued progress no matter how small it seems to us.

Jamestown Pics!

Started off as a rainy day, but thankfully it stopped and we spent time in the Powhatan Indian village.

Field Trip Day!

Tomorrow we go to Jamestown. That’s a big deal here in Virginia, fourth graders study Virginia history and Jamestown kicks it off. I’ve been going for six years now, the one thing that stands out is, Pocahontas is not pretty. She’s rather a buxom women. Disney needs to go back to the drawing board.

My good friend Latrice came to my classroom and gave the kids supplies for their plants.
In January she will return and re-pot them, when they are bigger we will donate them to our schools community garden.

Insights(9/30)

Today you showed me a little piece of who you really are. It was a brave and scary thing to do, for that I am proud of you. As I listened to you speak my heart was breaking with every word you spoke. I had to remind my self not to take it personally but how could I not, I gave my supplies…. pencils, notebooks, erasers, and most of all my heart. In return you ripped covers off of notebooks, broke apart erasers and stomped on my heart. What scares me is that you are unable to feel any remorse for your actions. After all, you said you didn’t think you needed to say your sorry, and you didn’t feel bad for what you did. What frightens me is how will you survive in this world, how will you make meaningful relationships? What is my role beyond your teacher in helping you to be a caring member of society?

This was on Tumblr, how sad that such a simple act is too difficult for some to complete. Knowing someones name is a sign of respect.

Learning through Teaching: Lesson #1: Learn their names
I began looking over and responding to my students’ journals today. One entry in one of my 8th grader’s journal looked something like this:
“Today my social studies teacher made me really mad. He said my name wrong, and when I corrected him, he said ‘It doesn’t matter. You expect me to know…

Whew!!!!!

This school year is off to a bangin start! I do appreciate having only two grades this year, but still feel kind of frazzled by it all. Kids who should be on medicine and aren’t, kids who are on medicine but don’t take it, especially on Mondays. You think you got a schedule figured out, but that doesn’t work. At the end of the day I look back and figure out what and how I need to change, and vow to come back the next day refreshed.
I ask for forgiveness where I dropped the ball and the grace to walk in a new day!

Reflections

The first week is over; funny how a short week can feel like the longest. This year I get to only have two grades in my room, fourth and fifth, in my self-contained exceptional education classroom. I’m looking forward to being a little more focused and not so scattered. With only two grades my assistant and I can really do some directed teaching. The kids are higher functioning than some of my previous classes which is very exciting to me. I have a couple of kids that struggled all week with focusing issues. One child did not have medicine and boy, she was like a ping pong ball all day every day. The other child’s mother refuses to give medicine. I’m all about not rushing into medicine, but this poor child is all over the place. Needless to say, it was very stressful. My plan of action for next week is to change me and try to make some changes in my expectations.

Back to School

Some of us return to school tomorrow.
May we have the strength to ask for help
The humility to accept that help
Courage to help others

Back to school for teachers!

Today was a day filled with hope and inspiration! Our speaker was Mayor Dwight Jones' son, who wasted no time pumping us up. I always look forward to this time of the year because to me it signifies new beginnings and anything is possible. I can not wait to try out new ideas and tweaking old ones.

Back to School=Fun times!

I love back to school time! New pencils, books, papers, and lots of crayons; everything is clean and bright, I don't want to use anything less spoil the newness. Alas, that first sentence is written and picture is drawn and a whole new world is opened.
Looking forward to another exciting year and having many opportunities to touch my kids in a special way.
